According to an old Narayana legend, every night a white bear would visit the lake in Hal Hahpa, attempting to catch the Moon's reflection for himself. One evening, while the bear swam futilely back and forth, he saw that a fire had broken out in the holy city. Bravely risking his own life, he barreled out of the lake and ran through the burning buildings, scooping up a Narayana child and carrying it to safety. When the grateful parents came to collect their infant daughter, they were astonished to see that the bear's chest was marked with a moon-shaped crescent, where he had clutched the frightened child to his chest.
